- Futurity Stakes Day - 02/03/02
|A great days racing at Caulfield couldn't be spoilt by the on and off drizzle that finally cleared away after the St. George Stakes. The main event was the Group 1 Futurity Stakes a race with a rich history stretching back more than a century and a list of past winners that reads like a Who's Who of Australian racing. The three-year-olds continued their recent domination of this race with the grey colt Dash For Cash continuing on his winning way. The Group 2 St. George Stakes created enormous interest with the return to Caulfield of the Cups' heroine Ethereal. The star galloper Northerly was sent out a short-priced favourite but had to overcome difficulties in running to win. Aided by the genius of Damien Oliver who had patiently waited for the rails run to come he showed great heart in the straight to haul in the leaders. The blueblood colt Don Eduardo took another step to greatness by winning the Group 2 Shannons Classic. He has met every challenge Lee Freedman has presented to him this autumn and will now be heading to Sydney for the AJC Derby.
