- Rubiton Stakes Day - 12/01/02
|It was a beautiful sunny day at Caulfield for the first group race contested under the auspices of the re-named Melbourne Racing Club (formerly the Victoria Amateur Turf Club). A very strong breeze from the south gave the horses a tailwind down the side of the course. This resulted in a new course record for the main event - the Group 3 Rubiton Stakes over 1100 metres. The aptly named gelding Intelligent Star sizzled over the sprint distance to record his 9th. win from 15 starts. He will now be tackling the big league in the upcoming WFA events. The other feature - the Listed Zedative Stakes for three-year-olds was won by the Freedman trained Barkada who by-passed the Magic Millions three-year-old event on the Gold Coast in favour of this event. He will be prominent in whatever he contests in the future.
