It wouldn't be the Caulfield Cup without a bit of drama and we were again
witness to an intriguing and enthralling contest. We had the co-favourite Inaflury dashing
to a big lead mid-race when Jim Cassidy could not hold her. As they turned for home it was
anybody's race with the horses spread across the track. We had Sky Heights on the extreme
outside going stride for stride with the kiwi mare Ethereal while young Rhys McLeod had
saved many lengths hugging the rail on the outsider Celestial Show and it looked for a
moment as they he had stolen a winning break. These three cleared away from the pack to
fight out the finish with Ethereal digging deep to hold on by a nose from a fast finishing
Sky Heights with Celestial Show just half a neck away in third place. It was a great
triumph for trainer Sheila Laxon and a special moment following her remarkable recovery
from a near fatal race fall in New Zealand a decade ago. The mare is now being aimed at
the Melbourne Cup and has been given a 2 kilogram penalty by the chief handicapper of
Racing Victoria Jim Bowler.
