- Victoria Derby Day - 03/11/01
|A record crowd gathered at Flemington to witness the VRC's Derby Day, one of the great racedays to be seen anywhere in the world with three Group 1 races, three Group 2 races and three Group 3 races on the card. The program includes the best three-year-olds, the best sprinters, the best mares and some of the best middle distance WFA gallopers and longer distance specialists going around. The main event was the Derby with the highly talented colts Viscount and Ustinov expected to have a great battle with the small but gutsy Amalfi also given a good chance. The result was nearly a boilover with the outsider Zarek almost breaking his maiden status. However, a confident Damien Oliver put away the whip on Amalfi over the final stages to coax him over the line and score by only a short half head.
