It was a fine but cool winter day at Flemington for the running of the David Bourke Provincial Plate. The feature event was won by the Geelong galloper Hit The Spot trained by Charlie Goggin. Earlier in the day the champion steeplechaser St. Steven was sent out a short priced favourite in the Trevor Clarke Steeplechase. He was upstaged by the consistent Striding Edge who challenged him coming to the second last and ran away from the champ for a great win. The impressive Specular made it eight wins from nine starts over the jumps in winning the LV Lachal Hurdle. The Listed A.R. Creswick Stakes for three-year-olds was taken out by the Adelaide gelding Naden. The two heats of the 2003 VRC Winter Championship were taken out by Wyngrove and Le Zagaletta.
