Race 4 The Brighton Mazda Vanity (Group 3) Race 5 Lightning Stakes (Group 1) |
The speedsters gathered at Flemington to contest the first leg of the
autumn sprint treble: the Group 1 Lightning Stakes. This event has a proud tradition with
past winners including Maybe Mahal and Schillaci heading a superb list. Three-year-olds
have a great record in this race but it appeared to be an even field with tremendous
depth. The Sydney mare Spinning Hill, carrying the colours made famous by Tie The Knot,
stormed home in the concluding stages to win from the three-year-olds Mistegic and Chong
Tong. Earlier the gutsy filly Gold Lottey proved too good for her rivals in the Group 3
Brighton Mazda Vanity. The Group 3 Debonair saw a field of fine three-year-old colts and
geldings contesting the prize. The consistent and underrated Dash For Cash had far too
much dash for the others. The Cadbury Guineas will be run next Sunday and is shaping as a
great race with many of these young guns hopefully backing up.
