On a fine but
overcast day the all conquering Northerly was back at Caulfield to contest the Group 1
C.F.Orr Stakes. There was pre-race drama as Northerly was vetted after he grazed a leg in
the parade ring. Passed fit to run he took his place in the classy field which included
his fellow West Australian Old Comrade, the 2001 VRC Derby winner Amalfi, top Kiwi
galloper Cent Home and the Group 1 winner Mr. Murphy. But it was the up and coming
three-year-old Barkada who stole the show. Piloted by boom jockey Scott Seamer he
controlled the race out in front and dashed clear at the top of the straight. Northerly
tried his heart out as usual finishing second with Cent Home third. Earlier in the day in
the Listed Veuve Cliquot Stakes the smart filly Innovation Girl was out to prove she
deserved a tilt at the Blue Diamond. Never travelling comfortably she tried hard but
failed to haul in the Hawkes-trained Yell and will now be spelled. The Group 2 Carlyon Cup
was the race that propelled Northerly into the spotlight last year and may do the same for
the smart mare Piper Star. She won with great authority and will now be set for the
Australian Cup.
