It was a glorious autumn day at Caulfield for Easter Saturday with the feature event the Group 3 Carlton Draught Easter Cup. A strong field lined up at the start despite a couple of significant scratchings. The consistent gelding Bush Padre scored a great win proving too strong for his rivals. It was a case of good luck for John Didham who picked up the ride after Peter Mertens had to forfeit the ride having injured a leg in an earlier race. The day also saw the emergence of a young rider from Queensland not yet 17 years of age. Bryce Dieckmann rode a double and looks a talent of the future.
