It was a sunny but chilly day at Caulfield for the running of the Listed weight-for-age Sir John Monash Stakes. The smart gelding Dantana proved too good for his rivals winning by 3 lengths eased down on the line. He may now be ready to take the next step and will no doubt be taking on the more proven weight-for-age performers in the coming months. The race for the jockey's premiership is continuing to create interest with Greg Childs (58 wins) riding a double and Kerrin McEvoy (59 wins) in the winner's stall just once. Apprentice Craig Newitt rode his 55th. winner and is within striking distance of the senior riders. Champion jockey Damien Oliver has ridden 58 and 1/2 winners but will not be riding again this season.
