It was a fine day at Caulfield for the running of the feature two-year-old event on the Melbourne racing calendar. The boom colt Bel Esprit was sent out a short-priced favourite for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes and he proved too good. He was ridden for speed all the way by jockey Wayne Treloar and after bursting to a big lead at the top of the straight held on well over the concluding stages. The filly Brief Embrace (second) kept him honest with the consistent Pillaging battling on for third. Bel Esprit now heads to Sydney for the Golden Slipper Stakes. Later in the day an excellent field assembled for the classic sprint the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate. It was anyone's race halfway down the straight until Sudurka dashed clear to win at the generous odds of $26. Earlier the filly Elegant Fashion scored in the Group 2 Armanasco Stakes and the smart mare Spurn won the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes. The expensive colt Don Eduardo came of age in the Listed Schweppes Cup and looks capable of further improvement. |
