THE OLD BOY DOES IT! The weather was threatening on a cold winter's day at Caulfield but there were more than a couple of prospective Spring gallopers to keep the racegoers warm. The Group 2 Memsie Stakes' field was again a mixture of race fit sprinters and potential Spring stayers resuming or second up including the Group 1 winner Magical Miss. The old timer Le Zagaletta proved he has lost none of his zip with a gutsy win over Super Elegant who had dashed clear only to be caught in the final stages by the 8 year old grey. He has apparently thrived since the Freedman operation was moved from the hustle and bustle of the city track at Caulfield to the rural setting of Rye. Before the feature event we saw the three-year-olds step out in the Group 3 McNeil Stakes which has always been a good guide to some of the feature three-year-old races for the Spring. The Steve Richards trained Cahuita has always shown promise and recorded his third and biggest win to date when he dashed past the boom horse Abdullah and held off the very smart Cross Current. In the Australian Racing Museum Plate we saw the Melbourne debut of the classy mare Lovely Jubly now prepared by Brian Mayfield-Smith and she didn't disappoint with a commanding victory. Another mare caught the eye in the last with the Zabeel stayer Legible showing a terrific sprint at the end of her first up victory over an unsuitable trip and appears to be a good prospect for the Spring. |
