STUDEBAKER LEADS ALL THE WAY! On a magnificent spring day at 'headquarters' we had a full day's racing with ten events contested including the Group 2 Turnbull Stakes, often a great pointer to the big Cups' and the Cox Plate. The form this year is less clear cut due to the very slow pace making it difficult for the back markers to make ground in the final stages. The front running Studebaker controlled the race from the outset and fought off all challengers in the straight to win comfortably. Many horses were across the track fighting for the minor prizes with Pentastic second and Strasbourg third. The filly Special Harmony looked the goods in winning the Group 2 Blazer Edward Manifold Stakes a race which has been a great guide to the soon to be run Thousand Guineas and VRC Oaks. No doubt Damien Oliver can't wait to get back on her after he forego the ride to be at the birth of his daughter. Back against the mares Vocabulary looked a good thing and she didn't let the punters down with an emphatic win in the Group 3 Jayco Stakes. She appears capable of winning some nice races over the remainder of the Spring. The old timer Bomber Bill is going as well as ever winning the Group 3 Gilgai Stakes at the generous odds of 10/1 down the famous Flemington straight. |
