It was another fine and sunny winter's day at Flemington for the 138th. running of the Cleanevent Grand National Steeplechase. The feature event was won by the Tony McEvoy trained Lance Corporal who was beautifully ridden by Craig Durden. As it was last week we saw an experienced jockey control the race to lead all the way for a magnificent win. After the race it was suggested that the gelding may be given the opportunity to prove himself on the world stage. We could see a fantastic race at Moonee Valley in three weeks if St. Steven comes back for the Hiskens Steeplechase and takes on Lance Corporal. Earlier in the day the B R Smith Hurdle was taken out by the Michael Moroney trained gelding Our Needles. He was back in fourth place before the last obstacle but proved too good on the flat dashing past the three horses in front of him. Later in the day the final of the Listed 2003 VRC Winter Championship was taken out by the former talented two-year-old Ebony Night who recorded only his second win. Hopefully we will see this impressive individual reach his full potential in future races.
