- Melbourne Cup Day - 06/11/01 INDEX |
|
Index | The crowd was down due to the terrible weather conditions but the Melbourne Cup again provided us with great theatre. It is truly a special event that throws up amazing coincidences and results that seem possible only in works of fiction. Where else would a horse called Give The Slip do as his name would suggest and nearly steal the show only to be run down in the final 100 m by the NZ mare Ethereal whose connection with the number 13 seems surreal. The win making Sheila Laxon the only woman to train a Melbourne Cup winner. It was also a triumph for jockey Scott Seamer who committed himself to Ethereal months ago after her win in the Queensland Oaks. Ethereal herself has joined a select group of racehorses in winning the big Cups' double having won the Caulfield Cup in mid-October. And to think she almost didn't run in the Melbourne Cup with the Hong Kong option initially the first plan and then the rain on the day nearly resulting in her scratching. Only in the Melbourne Cup. |
