It was a classic Melbourne day at Flemington for the one hundred and thirtieth running of a Group 1 classic - the Rosemount Estate Newmarket Handicap. Due to a strong sou'wester we had rain one minute then sunshine the next. A strong field was assembled to contest the cavalry charge down the 'straight six'. The classy mare Belle Du Jour proved too good for her rivals sprouting wings down the grandstand side of the track to reel in the three-year-old colt Bel Esprit who had dashed away to a big lead down the inside of the track. Later in the day the consistent filly Lashed finally broke through for a well deserved win at Group level in the Kewney Stakes.
