The traditional
ladies' day at Flemington saw a record crowd of over 101,000 turn out for the
three-year-old fillies' classic the VRC Oaks, a bigger crowd than for the Melbourne Cup,
no doubt due to the improved weather. It looked like an even competition with many of the
fancied runners having contested the Wakeful Stakes on Derby Day.
The punters warmed to the Bart Cummings trained Magical Miss who was sent out a $3
favourite. She didn't let them down with a commanding performance to win easily by 5
lengths. Bart Cummings was obviously impressed, comparing her to his previous galloper
Dane Ripper and speculating her future may lie in contesting the major WFA events next
year.
