- Newmarket Handicap Day - 09/03/02
|The weather was perfect for the running of Melbourne's classic sprint -
the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap down the famous Flemington straight. In an amazing finish
there were five horses across the track separated by just a head with Rubitano lasting on
the inside rail from North Boy and Mistegic. It was a great training feat by Brian
Mayfield-Smith and a daring ride by Stephen Baster who had won the race in 1994 on Mookta.
Earlier in the day we saw the successful return to Melbourne of top jockey Steven King who
took out the second event on Sunday Shoes. The top three-year-old fillies contested the
Group 2 Kewney Stakes a race won by the great mare Sunline back in 1999. The Tony McEvoy
trained Elegant Fashion was again very impressive in winning her third race from just six
starts in only her first preparation.
