An excellent field was assembled at Flemington to contest the wfa Group 1 Australian Cup run over 2000 metres. The weather was sunny and hot with a strong northerly blowing providing fans of the favourite with a confidence-boosting omen. As the big race neared however, the clouds gathered signalling the approach of the cool change. Eerily, the wind changed to the south moments before the horses jumped. Northerly began well and took up a forward position settling in second place behind the three-year-old All Courage. As they entered the straight the leader had weakened and Northerly was left in front. The challengers came at him and he fought them off - first Royal Code then Rain Gauge. Then his fellow West Australian Old Comrade came from the rear of the field. Paul Harvey timed his run to perfection to sprint past Northerly as it was clear that Northerly was fighting back on the line. Old Comrade emerged from Northerly's substantial shadow to be the champ in his own right. |
