SPINNING HILL WINS BACK TO BACK MANIKATO STAKES' On a typical Melbourne spring Saturday where we had all four seasons in one day the veteran mare Spinning Hill put in a tremendous effort to easily win her second Group 1 Cleanevent Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley, a feat not achieved for almost twenty years. The decision to keep her racing has been vindicated as she has come back as good as ever. Before the main event we saw a great battle between the four-year-olds in the Group 2 John F Feehan Stakes with the classy mare Vocabulary making the potential star Natural Blitz fight hard to win. Could these two be the emerging stars we are all looking for in the seemingly thin ranks of the weight-for-age scene in Melbourne? Later in the day we saw the Melbourne debut of the Gai Waterhouse trained Sunday Joy who impressively won the Group 3 W H Stocks Stakes cheered home by owners John and Julie Singleton. Apart from the winner the other mare to catch the eye was the David Hall trained Makybe Diva who flew home for fourth after being at the rear of the field on the home turn. |
