It was a beautiful evening at Moonee Valley for the night racing with the
feature event the running of the Group 2 Qantas Carlyon Stakes. A small but top quality
field was assembled for the 1200 m dash with the in-form Intelligent Star sent out
favourite. His main dangers seem to be the classy three-year-olds Ustinov and Royal Code
both resuming since performing well in the Spring. Intelligent Star seemed to have burst
to a winning break holding off Ustinov but then Royal Code came from the clouds to claim
victory in the last stride. It was an incredible win as he was held up for a run on the
hometurn. The crowd was boosted by the presence of singer/songwriter Paul Kelly who
entertained the punters before the big race.
