A huge crowd of
more than 38,000 packed into Moonee Valley to see if Sunline could emulate the great
Kingston Town by winning her third Cox Plate in a row. She was certainly the crowd
favourite but it was not to be with the WA galloper Northerly joining the elite ranks in
winning our WFA championship. He had to survive a double protest from Sunline (second) and
Viscount (third) before being crowned but he showed great fight to win after again looking
as though he was struggling before the turn. The star German galloper Silvano ran well for
fourth but never threatened the first three. Northerly gave Damien Oliver his second Cox
Plate and provided him with an extra thrill with horse, trainer and jockey all being West
Australians.
