A big crowd gathered at Sandown for the final day of the Melbourne Spring
Carnival, a day which seems to be gaining in strength each year. With the revamping of the
old Sandown Cup into a WFA event and now called the Sandown Classic (Group 2), the Sandown
Guineas (Group 2) for three-year-olds and a Group 3 open sprint as well as three other
Listed events, the day has developed into a fitting finale to a great carnival. The day
turned into the Damien Oliver show with the champion hoop riding five winners (and a
second by a head) from six rides - an exceptional performance by one of the world's
premiere jockeys. His wins included guiding Sky Heights to victory in the Sandown Classic
in an inspired ride going to the front as they passed the post for the first time and
never looking like being beaten. His other wins included the Sandown Guineas on the very
talented filly Moon Dragon who beat the colts in a canter showing a blistering turn of
foot rarely seen at the track.
