This race is named in honour of the 1973 Melbourne Cup winner and was taken out by the promising 3 year old Zero Rules who had contested the Alister Clark Stakes against many of the Cadbury Guineas runners including Mr. Murphy. There were many chances halfway down the straight until Zero Rules burst clear out wide on the track and won well despite running out further in the final 100 metres. Kojak led early and battled on well for third and the consistent Ascot Road recorded another second.
