On a very chilly
Saturday a good crowd of 9239 gathered at the Valley to witness the return to racing of
the champion mare Sunline in the Group 1 Manikato Stakes. She was expected to win as she
had done so in all her previous first up performances. The field was stronger than last
year's race with the exciting international winner Falvelon providing the biggest threat.
As it turned out the Tony Noonan-trained mare Piavonic caused one of the biggest upsets
for many years.
