On a very windy
day many of the potential spring stars were at Flemington to contest the Group 2 Craiglee
Stakes, always a good guide to the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The best three year olds
also gathered to contest the time honoured Group 2 event, the Ascot Vale Stakes. A race
won by such legends of the turf as Vain, Surround and Manikato all of whom went on to also
take the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas later in the spring. North Boy kept his unbeaten record
intact in the Ascot Vale while Native Jazz and Universal Prince firmed as Cups' favourites
after the Craiglee.
