There was a sad
silence hanging over proceedings at Flemington on Sires' Day following the tragic death of
Peter Hayes during the week from an aircraft accident near Mildura. A minute's silence was
observed prior to the main event and flags flew at half-mast to honour the eldest son of
Colin Hayes. He was well respected and liked by all who knew him.
