This classic race
is named in honour of the famous commander of the Australian Military forces Sir Thomas
Blamey. Once a lead up race to the Australian Cup it has been moved to the last day of the
Flemington autumn carnival. The field is now made up of 1600m specialists rather than
middle distance weight for age horses. A good pace was set early by Go Flash Go and
Avilde, before Aka Bilk went to the lead at the 600m and set up a good break at the top of
the straight. Emission set out after him and looked set to win before Market Price
sprouted wings over the last 100m to dash clear and win by 2 lengths in an amazing
performance. Emission held on for second from a fast finishing Second Coming who looks set
for a big year.
