A good pace made this a genuine contest with Damien Oliver giving King of Roses the run of the race in third place and he looked set to win in the straight until the backmarker Shelbourne Lass burst from the pack to challenge him. They had a good battle over the concluding stages until the filly broke clear to win well. King of Roses will improve with racing as this was only his third start. The Hayes filly Chalonnaise came in third.
