The classy three year olds Desert Sky and Mr. Murphy dead-heated for first in this absorbing contest. Desert Sky jumped to the lead from the outset and was never headed with Mr. Murphy diving at him on the inside to only draw level right on the line. Damien Oliver was forced to try for a rails run after being pocketed on the fence having followed Desert Sky throughout the race. The older horses Black Bean, Skoozi Please and Porto Roca looked to have winning chances as they came down the middle of the track but the three year olds held them out with Porto Roca closing on them to run third.
