There was no pressure put on the leaders which resulted in only a moderate pace allowing them to control the race making it difficult for the backmarkers. The first three horses after settling ended up being the first three home. Spectatorial led with La Lagune on the outside of True Jewels who was back on the rails. The race was up for grabs right until the line when True Jewels proved the strongest to win by just a head from La Lagune second with Spectatorial third. Lohnro and Faiza ran on well but were never going to win. The winning combination of jockey Kerrin McEvoy and trainer Mike Moroney added the Blue Diamond to their Melbourne Cup success with Brew. The owners of True Jewels erupted with delight in the mounting yard after she scored.
