This race has always been a good guide to the Australian Cup and boasted some good winners over the years. The New Zealand middle distance horses appear to be stronger than the local contingent and the result of this race confirmed that with a Kiwi trifecta. Cent Home sweated up very badly before the race but David Walker gave him the run of the race as he settled third behind the leaders one off the fence. He went around the leaders on the home turn and dashed clear to set up a winning break before his challengers could get out of the pack and chase him. The smart kiwi mare Giovana was held up for a run having been pocketed on the fence and she stormed home to fail by just half a head. Kaapstad Way settled at the rear and flew home as usual for third. The race was run in record time 1:47.19, eclipsing the old mark set by Vo Rogue and Waikikamukau.
