The crowd was
entertained by Christine Anu before the big race singing her hit songs and the national
anthem before the horses paraded. After fears of a less than classic field a few months
ago, the Australian Cup field was quite strong with the kiwi stars Kaapstad Way, Giovana,
Cent Home, Showella and Hill Of Grace over to fight it out with the 2000 VRC Derby winner
Hit The Roof, the WA star Northerly, the 2000 Caulfield Cup winner Diatribe and some other
promising gallopers. The race was there to be won at the 400m with many chances at the top
of the straight as the field spread across the track. After travelling three wide for the
most part, Northerly left them standing as he burst to the lead inside the last 200m to
record an incredible win in the record time of 1:59.46, his last 200 in 11.87s. This
lightly raced 4 year old gelding has yet to reach his best according to his proud trainer
Fred Kersley, best known for his harness racing deeds but obviously a great horseman full
stop. The three year old Hit The Roof ran a great race for second with the consistent
Kaapstad Way third.
