On a perfect summer's day the top three years were assembled at Caulfield to contest the Group 2 Shannon Classic, a similar field to the Cadbury Guineas but without the smart Mr. Murphy. The track was rated good and the rail was out 9 metres. Other races included the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes for mares four years and up and the Carlton Draught Gold Cup a quality handicap with the smart WA galloper Northerly engaged.
